Overkill / Even you Brutus? 2024
Steel & Zinc.
Work in progress.
This sculpture depicts an old chopped tree stump on top of a pile of rocks. On one side of the stump, various knives are stuck in: we see a chef’s knife, a pocket knife, half of a pair of scissors, a dagger, but also a fantasy tribal knife, a potato peeler, and more (23 in total).
Carved into a rock is written: "Et tu Brute?"—the famous last words of Caesar to his protégé Brutus after he was stabbed by him and 22 members of the Roman Senate.
In this image, the chopped tree stump represents the climate, suffering under the influence of humans. Just as nature doesn’t expect us—those who benefit so much from a healthy ecosystem—to also attack and destroy it.
The tree stump is placed on rocks to elevate it without using a pedestal; moreover, this gives the impression that the ground has become infertile.
The number and variety of the knives are meant to feel a bit absurd/comical and suggest that everyone contributes to this ecocide.
